Governor Rendell Kicks Off Sports Hall of Fame Gala

On February 9, at the Society Hill Sheraton, Governor Ed Rendell joins the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame Foundation and Mayor John Street for its inaugural event honoring some of this citys most revered sports figures.  

"I applaud the volunteer efforts of the men and women who worked hard to establish the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame, and I'm looking forward to Monday night's inaugural gala when we honor an impressive charter class that has built an unsurpassed sporting tradition here in the great city of Philadelphia," the Governor said.

The evening begins with a cocktail reception and silent auction. Over 30 items will be auctioned, among them are: a signed Chuck Bednarik Frank Gifford” photograph, a signed 16 x 20 Dr. J slam dunk picture and a Mike Schmidt signed career statistics baseball in glass display case.

Attending the gala are Master of Ceremonies, Pat Williams and inductees: Chuck Bednarik, Steve Van Buren, Joe Frazier, Sonny Hill, Paul Arizin, Robin Roberts, Harry Kalas, and family members representing Bert Bell, Wilt Chamberlain, Connie Mack, Jimmie Foxx, Bill Tilden, and Richie Ashburn.

Founded in May, 2002, the Sports Hall of Fame Foundation serves to preserve and promote the rich history of Philadelphia sports, and honor those athletes, coaches, teams, organizations, fans, events and venues that have brought great pride and glory to the great city of Philadelphia.
